“Tailender’s”……

Enjoyed being out over the xmass/new year break, the solitude on the Wexford coast of a fine winters day is surely good for the soul. As for the fishing, December can be sweet when the weather obliges, and with ever milder winters, water temp stays good enough until the end of January around here.    Surface lures still accounted for a majority of the fish right through December, except on the days when a wind chill factor kicked in on some of the shallower marks…..

Big avian commotions within sight offshore give away the Herring/Sprat shoals, & you wonder is that where the real party’s at ??…. Of course, fish care little for calendars, they make the most of any opportunities when they can, & just react to conditions dictated by temp, air pressure, day/night length, that are hardwired into its instinct, & that instinct is telling them the times of plenty are running out.

January 2nd I met my first few Bass of 2017 on a glorious winter morning, a 58cm egg laden female by the looks of it, a quick measure, tag, pic, & she was on her way with her precious cargo…. You shouldn’t look on these fish as early birds because their not….. I always think of them as the “Tailender’s” of the previous year, whatever the calendar says……
